KAIOLA CANOE CLUB
“KAIOLA” in Hawaiian means: KAI – Ocean; OLA – Life; the ‘Ocean of Life’.
Our Club is the ‘Ocean’, and our Members are our ‘Life’
Kaiola is a ‘racing’ Hawaiian outrigger canoe club. We are located on the Island of Kauai, Hawaii. Our main club house is situated in Niumalu, on the banks of the Huleia River. Our satellite club is located on the white sandy beach of magical Hanalei Bay. Our two club sites enable our members to practice in the most diverse and challenging yet beautiful scenic waters in Kauai.
Kaiola has over 200 active members, and thousands of alumni and friends. We have 9 paddle programs: Naopio (9-18); Men (19-60); Women (19-60); Makuakane (60 +); Makuahine (60 +); and several afterschool programs: Kauai High School, Kauai Economic Opportunity, Queen Liliuokalani Trust and Punanaleo. Primary requirement to be a member of Kaiola is to support and respect our community, club, and fellow paddlers.
Kaiola’s practice calendar is year round. Racing calendar is from February through October. We are members of the Garden Island Racing Canoe Association, and the Hawaii Canoe Racing Association. We are well known and respected as a racing canoe club. Competition canoe races include the State of Hawaii, West and East Coasts of America, Tahiti, New Zealand, and Australia.
Kaiola’s club house is over 5,000 sq. ft., and we have a canoe paddle training tank, weights, outrigger canoes, 1 & 2 man canoe storage, meeting room, changing and shower facilities. We have 22 canoes including our precious Koa wood canoe “Haupu”, which is the largest collection of racing canoes on Kauai.
Kaiola was founded in 1985. The founders of Kaiola Canoe Club are Keiki O Ka Aina (Children of the Land) who paddled since “small-kid-time”. They have coached hundreds of paddlers, and now as all parents do, look upon their efforts and progeny with continued support, pride, and joy. Sustainability of Kaiola comes from members’ strength, hard work, determination, perseverance, persistence, foresight, desire to support the community and an unshakable love for the Hawaiian culture and art of outrigger canoe paddling.
Kaiola is a State and Federal 501 (c) 3 non-profit tax exempt corporation. In order to maintain and repair our canoes, equipment, and club house, we do fundraising activities throughout the year and accept tax exempt donations. Fund raisers include Annual Business Man’s Race, Concerts, Food Booths, Company Parties, Weddings, and Ocean Burials. Kaiola Canoe Club has earned the distinction of supporting and giving back to our Kauai community.
We invite you to visit and paddle with us!
